As the world’s most popular sport, football (or soccer) is talked and written about in a huge variety of contexts. In this class, we will analyze the talk and writing about football from a linguistic perspective. First, we will consider various text types, such as different forms of live commentary, but also press conferences or football chants. In this context, we will also discuss the topic of multimodality. Second, we will focus on the structural level, analysing words, phrases and syntactic constructions that are conventionally used in the language of football. Additionally, the role of metaphors and semantic frames will be considered in this context. Finally, we will have a look at communication around football from an interactional perspective – which linguistic resources are used for which activities – and with regard to the construction and representation of gender categories.
