In this class, we will explore the role of language in the social
construction of gender. To this end, students will first be introduced
to basic terminology and concepts of gender studies. Then, we will
consider select linguistic phenomena related to gender, for example
morphological and lexicological aspects of addressing and referring to
people or the investigation of gendered language through collocation. In
addition, we will have a look at how gender is interactionally
constructed by linguistic practices.
