Not too long ago, news stories about indigenous peoples in North America were hard to come by in mainstream media. Indigenous peoples challenged this underrepresentation through their activism, think #NODAPL, indigenous media outlets and their own outspoken commentaries in mainstream media.
While those headlines draw the readers’ attention for a short moment, it is the larger stories behind them that expose the complexities of what is indigenous North America. This course hopes to draw a multifaceted picture of indigenous lives in the past and present by starting at but going beyond recent news reports, eventually encouraging all course participants to engage with indigenous news sources themselves for a deeper understanding of Native Americans/First Nations Canadians.
