In this seminar we will critically consider how historiography on the Nordic Middle Ages is shaped by contemporary views of the present or the recent past, and its peoples and structures, and how power-structures and epistemes contribute to the presentation of Nordic history. We will become acquainted with different epistemes, frameworks and methodologies for examining historical source-material and will dive deeper into the medieval north and cover themes like the Vikings, conversion, Indigenous peoples, gender and contemporary politics. The seminar is recommended for those interested in the medieval north and it will be expected of the students to approach the course with some background knowledge of the history of the Nordic countries. Please be aware that the language of the seminar will exclusively be English. The seminar is intended for more advanced students of Scandinavian/Finnish studies who have not yet passed the "Modul 5a Nordeuropa-Studien I" and for HiCuBaS students as part of module "WM 2: Gender Relations in Historical and Cultural Perspective in the Baltic Sea Region".
