This class is part one of the two-part module “Applied Studies of English”. If you want to complete this module, you must participate in both classes that are thematically connected. The second part will take place in the summer term of 2023.
The theme of the two seminars is “adaptation”, and the focus is on the 18th century. In the first part, we will discuss adaptation theory in general as well as the different forms that adaptation can take (between texts, films, comics, the stage, video games and other media). We will then focus on existing attempts at adapting works or aspects of the 18th century (novels, historical events, biographies) through all available media.
One of the examples and a possible connection to the second part will be the video-game adaptation of Alexander Pope’s The Rape of the Lock that is being developed by the IfAA at the moment. Possible interactions will be contributing to the game design / game balance, discussing the visual and narrative presentation, or playtesting.
The second part of the seminar next semester will then focus on your own projects of adaptation.
