This course is designed for students who aim to become English teachers
as it puts special emphasis on sociolinguistic aspects of English
language teaching and how sociolinguistic processes influence the
teaching persona. We will discuss Standard English and Standard
Language Ideology, language change, English varieties and the problems
surrounding the idea of the 'native speaker'. The aim of the class is to
provide students with tools to create a classroom atmosphere in which
language variation and multilingualism are seen as advantages and not as
obstacles.
