People who love poetry will probably not even read this and will have already registered for the course. Welcome! But what if you don’t like poetry, maybe because you feel that you don’t “get” it? Then this class is for you as well! Reading poetic language and form is engaging literature in its most concentrated form (“charged with meaning to the utmost degree”) – it is like going to a special gym for your literary brain. Sometimes challenging and difficult, but highly efficient and always rewarding, often providing sentences and phrases that will remain with you forever.
In this seminar, we will take a survey of poetry in the 20th century, when traditional forms were cast off for good and anything was possible. We will encounter movements like The Movement and groups like The Group, as well as confessional and beat poetry, and we will also include song lyrics from rock to rap.
