Today’s intrastate conflicts are often protracted and the involved conflict parties are unable to solve them uni- or bilaterally. In these cases, third parties regularly offer (or impose) their assistance to contribute to ending the conflict. When electing a form of intervention, third parties have a wide variety of tools to choose from, ranging from military interventions to various forms of diplomacy. In the seminar, a short introduction into peace and conflict studies is provided first, to establish the necessary amount of background knowledge, before focusing on conflict resolution. Next, and building the main part of the seminar, we are going to learn about the different forms of third-party intervention, the conditions under which they are most likely to be employed, as well as their likelihood of successfully ending intrastate conflicts.
