This course will enlarge on the main tenets of the study of (context-independent) language meaning. Starting from basic concepts such as sense and reference, denotation and connotation, and the linguistic sign, the course will explore topics central to semantics, such as deixis, types of meaning, sense relations, but also sentential semantics and structural and cognitive approaches to semantics. Participants of this course will both receive theoretical input on all relevant concepts discussed in the course and develop analytical skills facilitating semantic investigations of spoken and written English.
