What could possibly go wrong? Well, anything we can think of, judging by the proliferation of dystopian visions in literature, film, games, or social media in recent years. Dystopia, a fictional future in which society has taken an extreme turn for the worse, has been a constant presence in the late modern imaginary, though the reasons for that turn have continued to evolve. We will look at some of the more recent examples and the issues they raise, from women’s rights to cloning, social media surveillance, reality TV and artificial intelligence.
