Hey ho, let’s go! Punk was one of the great revolutions in music and popular culture. Depending on who you ask, it started in 1975 and was dead and done by 1979, or it lived through the 80s to be replaced by grunge in 1991 – or it has become one of the major influences on popular culture that is so pervasive that we do not even see it anymore. In this seminar, we will take on all of these viewpoints, looking at the years that gave rise to the phenomenon in the UK and the US, trying to understand what makes the music, the style and the philosophy distinctive, and tracing the development of its different sub-genres through the decades and into our present. There will be loud music, noisy discussions, and some DIY-crafting. Now I wanna... use some glue!
