Crossed modules of groups appear in various contexts, such as:
- group extensions
- group cohomology
- homotopy groups
- identities among relations (going back to Alan Turing)
- higher holonomy / gauge theory
We will give an introduction to crossed modules of groups,
and then investigate their role in some of the above contexts.
We will recall necessary notions from group theory,
depending on the audience's background.
Requirements:
- basics of group theory
- recommended: basics of category theory
