The 20^th century saw the rise of mass democracy and mass politics as well as unprecedented political experiments, in both good and bad. The controversies of 20^th century political theory closely reflect these historical events; some of the texts we read contributed to them directly, others reflect and try to make sense of them. Furthermore, since much of the 20^th-century political thought also consists of developments of and reactions to 19^th-century controversies especially in liberal and Marxist theory, some background familiarity with these is recommended. In order to understand these texts in their historical context, the course offers a chronological survey of these theoretical controversies.

Wichtiger Hinweis: Das Thema für eine Hausarbeit in diesem Seminar muss modulübergreifend angelegt sein. Ein regelmäßiger Besuch beider Seminare im Modul „Aktuelle Kontroversen in der Politischen Theorie und Ideengeschichte“ ist daher erforderlich.
