As an introduction to the study of US American popular culture, this seminar is designed to equip students with the basic skills and terms to approach popular culture as an object of study. We will hence work towards a shared understanding of what defines popular culture and how popular culture relates to cultural studies. In a second step, we will turn to select examples of popular media culture (e.g., film, TV, popular music, advertising) and introduce core concepts and contexts for their analysis.
Overall, our goal is to develop a critical framework to assess how different formats and contexts shape the meaning of images and stories we consume on a daily basis.
