What is culture? Why do “serious” scholars engage with “frivolous” subjects, such as fashion and music videos? How can one “read” a music video? Is Cultural Studies just Literary Studies without books?
This introductory course aims to answer these questions (and raise new ones) by providing first-year students with an overview of cultural studies as a scholarly discipline, including its genesis, central theories and methods, and current concerns. It will combine lecture elements with classroom activities and asynchronous assignments to encourage students to develop new scholarly perspectives and become comfortable with new disciplinary terminology. The course is thus designed to lay the foundation for students’ future active participation in seminars and their independent research in the field of cultural studies.
