Video games are the most successful emerging genre of the 21st century, but their popular success as well as their increasing interconnectedness within a gamifying society are indicative of a much broader development. Contemporary culture is experiencing a paradigm shift, in which games emerge as a new conceptual metaphor we use to make sense of our world, from cultural forms like literature and the arts to social phenomena like labor and education, and social systems like politics and finance. This seminar will explore some of the manifestations of the ‘game paradigm’ in contemporary culture and particularly in literature and film. |
