The 1920s are an incredibly diverse and productive decade for literature. While many celebrated the “Roaring Twenties” with abandon, others noticed the shallowness of this never-ending cocktail party, and a whole generation of writers were so disillusioned from the experience of the First World War that they became “lost”, setting up exile in Europe. In this seminar, we will zoom back almost exactly 100 years, to the years 1925 and 1926 and sample the range of literary engagements with their times, covering texts that have become landmarks in literary history in the meantime.
