Most humans are born with the instinct to eat. How then do we end up turning our eating preferences into markers of individual identity? And does that mean, those preferences are purely our individual choice? Which role does culture play in our eating habits? What do food choices say about the society at large? If gender, class, ethnicity - and more - effect what and how we eat, what exactly are American foodways?
We will look at the past, present and future of food production and food consumption in American society - with lots of practical examples, perhaps even tastings, and engaging discussions - and thus hope to gain a more complex understanding of American society beyond the "Melting Pot" and "Salad Bowl".
