In this seminar we will examine different forms of protest literature, from prose, to film, to muralism, to photography.  Examining political, cultural, and social protest movements (ie: American Revolution, abolition, suffrage, Gay Rights, Black Lives Matter, immigration, Women's March, right-wing extremism in the age of Trump), we will interrogate how, in the words of John Stauffer, protest literature "not only criticizes and protests society, but ... suggests, either explicitly or implicitly, a solution to society’s ills” (2005).
