Yeah I'm out that Brooklyn, now I'm down in Tribeca
Right next to DeNiro, but I'll be hood forever
I'm the new Sinatra, and since I made it here
I can make it anywhere, yeah, they love me everywhere
- Jay-Z "Empire State Of Mind" (feat. Alicia Keys)
In this seminar we will walk the streets of New York through myriad forms of literature - ie: music, film, prose, poetry, graffiti. We will examine representations of race, class, and gender through work (from early writings, to the Harlem Renaissance, recollections of 9/11, the worlds of Drag, and immigrant fiction) that represents the city's myriad communities.
