Remember all those grammar lessons and endless vocab lists? Since most of us are second language learners of English, we all had to go through the different learning and developmental stages of second language acquisition (SLA), experience different highs and lows, realise that others seem to learn differently to us and put up with different styles of teaching that may have supported or hindered our learning.
In this seminar, we will look at different aspects of (SLA). We will investigate how second language learning is different from first language learning, discover how learners learn and assess different developmental sequences and their consequences for learning and teaching. Whilst also looking at different methodological approaches over time, further questions tackled in the seminar include:
How can we study and assess the learning of L2 learners?
What roles do learning aptitude, motivation and personality play?
How can individual differences in L2 learning be explained?
What are the current issues being discussed in L2 research?
How can we create the best learning environment possible?
This seminar combines linguistic approaches to SLA and practical consequences for foreign language teaching, which makes it account for the modules Ling II as well as Teaching English II (PS).
