Literature can take many roles in life and learning. It can serve as a window which opens up a whole new world when looking through it. Likewise, just like a mirror, literary texts give readers the chance to reflect on topics, language, characters, on society, peers and themselves. In this regard, dealing with literature in English language teaching does not only have advantages for practising language-related skills, but can also facilitate skills that belong to EQ (emotional intelligence).

What can we as teachers do with literary texts? What can we expect from students?

In this advanced seminar we will take a look at chances that literary texts (mainly short fiction and poetry) offer for addressing various learners and thus also diverse readers in a school context. We will explore many ways of dealing with literature from the perspective of teachers (planning) and students/readers (interacting with texts).

Is literature really a key to empathy? And if so, which didactic keys do we need to let literature unfold its sometimes hidden potential by addressing individual texts and individual readers?

Let us find out in this course!

Note: This course will alternate between digital and face-to-face sessions. The digital sessions are closely linked to a moodle course, the face-to-face session will take place in a seminar room yet to be announced.
