In this course, we study the formation and classification of English words and sentences (Morphology & Syntax). We begin with an analysis of the meaningful units in language – affixes and roots. We examine how they combine to form words, and how they can be grammatically modified. We then discuss the classification of words and analyze how they are used in increasingly complex constructions: phrases, clauses, and complex sentences. By the end of this course, students will have acquired essential skills in analyzing words (morphology) and sentences (syntax) within the context of a range of approaches within the respective areas of linguistics.
