In the Foreword to Take Us To Your Chief (2016), Canadian Anishinaabeg author Drew Hayden Taylor writes "As a Native Person, I was constantly and importantly made aware of our heritage, our culture, everything from the past that made us unique and special." Later he observes that "Admittedly, First Nations and science fiction don't usually go together." Yet with his collection of humorous sci-fi short stories, he proves his own observation wrong.

This course will introduce you to contemporary Native American/First Nations science fiction short stories, focusing particularly on Drew Hayden Taylor's  ingenious short stories that weave past, present and future into meaningful messages from Turtle Island. Additionally, we will include some indigenous LGBT sci-fi and fantasy stories. To see the history of the future from indigenous perspectives will hopefully not only increase your appreciation for indigenous literature but also help you understand the importance of hearing indigenous voices when it comes to reflecting about contemporary struggles  and thinking about the future of earth and humankind.
