This course is an introduction to Bayesian epistemology, which is the study of degrees of belief using the tools of probability theory. Most of the course will be devoted to learning and applying the mathematical formalism for Bayesian epistemology, understanding the theoretical motivations for Bayesian epistemology, and discussing Bayesian approaches to traditional problems in epistemology. We will also cover the basics of confirmation theory and decision theory. Along the way, we will apply the formal framework to philosophical puzzles and issues including Goodman’s new riddle of induction, Hume’s argument against miracles, the sleeping beauty problem, and others.
