The term “practical knowledge” sometimes refers to knowledge-how. This kind of practical
knowledge is essentially a kind of skill or ability. Other times “practical knowledge” refers to a
special kind of self-knowledge: knowledge of our own actions and intentions. In this course, we
investigate both of these notions of practical knowledge, as well as their connections with each
other. We will start with Ryle’s seminal discussion of knowledge-how in The Concept of Mind and
Anscombe’s seminal discussion of intentional action in Intention. We will then discuss
contemporary literature on the subject.
